The last blog post was quite awhile back, before Winter Investiture, in fact. The holidays meant that a lot of things got set aside and we had a lot of events in the past two months.

There was Investiture, of course, and the Myrtleholt Hognamay, our December and January potlucks, 12th Night and Adiantum’s Mid-Winter Feast (Where Marcus was given an award!) and our House Feast will be on the new blog!

House Capuchin News 10-15-16

House Capuchin Shield2In August, since the last blog, a lot of teaching and events happened, and a batch of yummies went to a Laurelversary party at Crown. Bone needles, lucets and lucet cord mug tags were the big thing this month.

This past month was a lot of events, winding down tourney season. Marcus and Anja got to Coronet, ARC and

Amergin’s, teaching and running competitions. Amy finished a gross project on her mug tags. A bunch of other projects got started since this is the “making” season, now!

Anja’s done with events until Winter Investiture, although Marcus is going to Kingdom feast. We’re having our potluck on 10/23, at 3pm, and we will be hauling out some of the dance music and games that day.

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Metal Night changes off with….

House Capuchin News 8-11-16

House Capuchin Shield2h letter motifHouse Capuchin has had a busy month! Some of us got to fight practice, some to Adiantum’s A&S Night, but the local things are the *best*! We’ve had a lot of fun at the Sewing Time get-togethers, which often start way early and end way late! Project Day is going on as usual, with some projects really progressing (rag dolls/balls) and a lot of experimentation going on with lucets in particular.

Some of the display stuff

Some of the display stuff

The Toledo Summer Festival Demo was really good. There are a bunch of pictures in that report.

Finally cooked

Finally cooked

Some food experiments went on this month: Makerouns, Butterd Wortes, Papyns and Frytours of Herbes being the most obvious. Again, lots of pictures (and the Papyns are repeating for this month’s potluck!) and Will is making a try for a gluten-free frumenty or related dish. We also cooked up a fennel bulb and made candied borage flowers!

Some research things that are happening are on period logging techniques (which spirals off into woodworking tools….), Scythian garb, wooden clocks and Mamluk era embroidery patterns.

Then just this past weekend Marcus and Anja went to the Kaldor Ness A&S weekend, Anja to teach Holbein embroidery and Marcus to take casting. We had a great time and that’s the impetus for Metal Night getting going again.

Potluck this month is on 8/14 is is going to be just snacks, nothing fancy, although Anja has promised us Papyns!

House Capuchin News 7-13-16

House Capuchin Shield2o letter motifOur biggest news is that Metal Night is on hold. We have a couple of new folks who want to fight and Tuesday Night is the closest fight practice to us in Couer de Val. It’s hard getting things going, but this is going to be fun! Sewing Night has switched back to Thursday evening. Next Potluck is 7/24 and all are invited!

A belt that Loren wants to copy

A belt that Loren wants to copy

This past month was quite busy on the home front. We’re absorbing some local people as members of the group, getting them started with SCA basics, armor, names, heraldry, etc. We had our usual potluck with some new recipes being tried. Various folks are making progress on projects. Loren is working on lucets, thinking about making braided rope belts and Amy is doing lucet cord, having taught herself. Marcus is starting an ink project. Anja’s been doing and teaching blackwork and got going on her german apron again. 070816 Diane Tripp Brazil Blue CrushKaleb has been working on crochet with Will and learning needlepoint. Others are starting basic garb and fighting kit.

We got a lot of info from 50-Year and West/An Tir War into the reports, even if none of us could go. We even had visitors on the way home from War!

070916 HerbsThe Herbs group has been steadily processing, drying and labeling harvest, even if the number of folks involved has been fluctuating. We’re also working in our gardens and doing starts and other like projects. A couple of House members went to the Arnica Harvest (that didn’t) More on that, here: http://wp.me/p6tYq4-1gY

Also a bunch of stuff that’s being used as House property got inventoried, so that we can tell whose is what.

Arnica Harvest and Picnic

Event for An Tir Apothecary Guild · Hosted by MaryAnne Anja Bues Bartlett and Elizabeth E. Tunstall

Sunday July 10 from 12 PM – 6 PM, Kilchis River Area

We know a place where the wild thyme blows…. well, no…. it’s arnica, which blooms in early July out here in Triangulation in the Kilchis River area. Come join us for a harvest day and picnic!

We’ll be meeting up in Tillamook (directions below) and caravanning from there as the site is 4-wheel drive mandatory. There are a few extra seats in a couple of vehicles. Bring gloves, sunscreen, containers to take your gleanings home in (plastic grocery sacks or trash bags) and picnic goodies to share! There will be a short workshop on how to bundle and prepare your goodies for drying, and we’ll talk over how best to make salves, poultices and oils from it. Bring cameras for the view at the top. If it’s a clear day you can see 3 of the mountains in the distance!

Anyway… directions: Go North on Highway 101, through Tillamook, and on past the cheese factory, Shortly after the top of the hill will be Alderbrook Rd on the right. Take that road. Go to where it forks and take the right fork toward Kilchis River Park. A couple of miles up there will be a bridge on the right with a sign pointing to Kilchis River Forest Rd (I think there’s a sign). Cross the bridge and pull into the parking lot on the left (8905 Kilchis Forest Road, Google maps has the pointer way off in the boonies, but zoom in….). At the far end of the parking area there will be a couple of outhouses. We’ll meet there and continue on up the forest road. It’s about 20miles from there. A part of the drive almost at the top will be a bit hairy for those who have any fear of heights as the road is steep and narrow and rocky for about 100′ …Oh, and about 1000′ to the bottom….
For Map https://www.google.com/maps/place/8905+Kilchis+Forest+Rd,+Tillamook,+OR+97141/@45.5027605,-123.8687618,14z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x5494d330fafce80f:0x5143be4e3eff4e8e!8m2!3d45.518275!4d-123.824044

Limited cell coverage once we’re at the top, and cell coverage at the parking area, I believe. Bring water! If it’s a hot day we’ll be broiling up there. Each vehicle MUST carry at least 2G of water and a shovel. Forestry rules.

House Capuchin News 6-13-16

House Capuchin Shield2h letter motifHouse Capuchin has been caught up in real life over the last couple of months. Anja and Loren are still in the process of moving. Some of our members are caught up in getting ready for the summer tourist season out here. The rest of us are taking a little bit of a breather catching up on personal stuff.

061116 Champion MarcusMarcus, our Pater Familias, is the new Arts & Sciences Champion of Tymberhavene! Ave, Pater! ….we’re going to tease him forever, though, about not getting the memo that said you’re not supposed to poison your judges! No, don’t ask me, as him….. <snicker> (Photo by Luciana)

Loren's Grail necklace

Loren’s Grail necklace

Loren was award the Grail of the Summits (green) at June Investiture. He wasn’t there so Anja accepted it for him and then our Pater made a ceremony of it for him at Her (then) Highness’ request at our Project Day.

Both Anja and Marcus were given Barberries for personal service to Her Highness toward the end of Vesta’s reign.

Rowan has a new Great Wheel that made an appearance at Investiture. Loren is making progress on sanding the pile of small wooden animals. Sabrina has made a pile of stitched books. Gudrun has done quite a lot of research into Chinese costume. Anja is getting places on her pincushion project. Marcus has finished the coils for the Latgallian Headdress and Anja has most of the non-metal pieces collected. All that’s left are the flat pieces for between the coils. A stack of sample swatches were donated to the House and those are rapidly becoming pouches and pincushions.

We have three new members: Jay, Stella and Luciana. Jay is interested in learning to make armor and fight as is Luciana, who just picked a name in the last couple of days! Luciana is also into arts and crafts and it starting a largesse project of making ankle bracelets. Stella helped Anja move quite a bit of her herb garden over the last month. All three are interested in cookery, so Anja is very happy.

Marcus and Anja went to Hocktide in Glyn Dwyn where Sadb was competing. Anja also taught at the event. They and Rowan attended June Investiture and participated in the A&S display. This past weekend Marcus and Anja went to War in the Trees, Marcus competing in the Championship and Anja teaching again.

Silphium chicken

Silphium chicken

For our potluck Jay and Anja make Lazer/Silphium Chicken, a recipe from Apicius that used a period fake for an extinct plant! He also helped prep and put away for freezing a lot of one of Anja’s fennel plants that will go into sausage over the rest of the year. The rest of the fare was not so exotic, but tasty: cheeses, breads, and a hot sausage. Anja also tried another fennel dish of Fennel root and stems in wine and honey and it failed, miserably, cooking for over 2 hours and scorching without ever softening enough to eat! 🙂

We’re not going to be getting to a lot of events over the summer, although Anja is planning a couple of upcoming competitions and her Championship. Marcus and a couple of our new members are going to hit a fight practice or three over the summer, maybe more if our new fighters keep it up, and are hoping for some workshops and A&S things that coordinate with Tymberhavene’s.

House Capuchin News 5-5-16

House Capuchin Shield2It’s been a month since the last post, although a new entry to the project portfolio happens at least once a week.

During this past month, Anja got to All Fool’s in Corvaria and had a marvelous time! One of our members got to St. Eggbert’s and posted a piece of our largesse that he received from there. Rowan is working on a Great Wheel and there are several sets of pictures of that. Marcus is still doing pins and working on the Largallian Headdress pieces. We should start assembly this month. Gudrun is doing research on period Chinese clothing. Anja has her psaltery case almost done and the repairs should be done this week. Loren is making bone needles. Sewing is changing venue for the Thursday afternoon part. Herb Bunch did seed starts and potting up, mostly, but we’re collecting stuff for making dyes (we hope). Potluck was small but tasty.

Best of all, the House completed not just one, but *two* gross projects this month and we made our goal of 2K pieces of “stuff” for ASL.

Happy 50th birthday for the SCA and Happy New Year for AS LI!

House Capuchin Shield2i letter motifIt’s been awhile since we’ve put up a blog post, although the reports have been coming out every week.

Our Winter Feast came off pretty well, although we had too much food for the people that showed up. We were awarded the Bountiful Hand for our Largesse

contributions last month, the same day that Marcus was given an A&S Grail for the Summits!

We’ve been attending various events and Anja is still trying to get to each branch at least once before next February. So far she’s made it to Corvaria for their All Fools’ and A&S championship, and Adiantum for Coronet and the A&S display and is scheduled to hit Glyn Dywn, Terra Pomaria and Tymberhavene in the next couple of months.

We’re having our House potluck on 4/17. The potluck starts at 3pm. Otherwise the regular meetings are going on, although attendance is down a bit. All are welcome to attend any of our regular meetings.

Marzipan & Candies

House Capuchin members made a bunch of candies, initially for our feast, but then we made some to take to Coronet, not just for the Royals and for the Silent Auction, but to share around.

031816 For auctionThis is the Silent Auction offering, a recycled candy tin filled with hand-made treats: rose marzipan (period, rolled in red sugar), filbert marzipan with vanilla (rolled in powdered sugar), chocolate-covered candied ginger, filbert marzipan with vanilla (rolled in yellow sugar) and the two oddballs in the middle are chocolate/filbert/candied ginger bites!
