This week there’s no Metal Night on Tuesday since Marcus is out of town. Sewing is at the usual time on Thursday. Anja and Marcus are heading for Coronet on Friday which is going to cancel Herb Bunch on Saturday. Sunday we might be back for part of Project Day, but Loren will be there for the entire time.
Here is the direct Portfolio link which has all the past Project Day reports and all the various projects, original here: https://housecapuchin.wordpress.com/portfolio/ and new one here: https://housecapuchin2.wordpress.com/portfolio/
Early Week – was a little odd because of the holiday on Monday and then Metal Night got called off for the week. Loren and Anja both were working on projects on Monday with more progress on the craft drawer rack and Anja working on the linen version of a Brigitta cap and more pouches. They both had been washing fabrics to get them prepared for being sewn, and since the box worked Anja started cutting batting and such for the other 9.
Sewing Time – …was just Anja and Marcus. Some goodies arrived in the mail. Thank you, Mistress Arlys! It was a package of cords for pouches and they’re lovely!
During the afternoon Anja finished a linen headgear set. She wore it on
Sunday (since that was the House Capuchin potluck).
Marius was there in the evening and Anja hemmed about 14 miles of skirt while we talked about all kinds of things including a major sewing project for an event this winter, the 12th Night outfits. We also talked about the event bid and what is still needed and then worked on stringing pouches.
…and more drawer rack on Friday.
…and pouches (pix from Saturday after things dried)
Herb Bunch – During the week Anja was harvesting, since the “rush” is coming. She and Loren got the branches of the fennel that had broken when it blew down in that un-seasonal storm and she prepped them for drying on Thursday. She also harvested blackberries, roses and lovage seed during the week and then more roses on Saturday, which all got processed during the first part of the workshop time. After that we grabbed out the shea butter and the infused oils that we made awhile back and made hard lotion bars.
We had 8.4 oz by weight of calendula and plantain infused oils (almond base) so we added that to equal amounts of shea butter and beeswax plus 3 ml each of cordiander and rosemary EO and 2 ml of sandalwood and 3 handfuls of ground rosemary that we sifted to make sure there weren’t any sticks. It made a nice scent. Shea butter has an odd scent on its own, so we’re trying to change it to something that smells good.
plus 30 pouches (above) and box, wax and rag doll.
Project Day – … got started late. Loren had to go after some of the feast foods, so Anja started on projects and then got distracted by a couple of friends who were telling the story of a recent pilgrimage. Willow and Caleb got there after a bit and 20 more pouches got strung and the rag doll progressed a little , then Marcus arrived and we talked about the event, starting out in the SCA, what largesse is and various other topics including the “An Tir Rebellion”.
Once Loren got back, he and Anja set up the feast in back, then everyone got dressed and we had our potluck. This was yummy!
Afterwards we pulled out various projects and got going on those, shaking up the pincushion filling, then making a couple of pincushions with it, starting another box, finishing pouches and working on the craft rack. (Those are the pieces in front of Loren and he’s smoothing a runner.
Anja was also playing with the headgear a bit, trying it with a veil and pinning the barbette differently, as well.
We finally quit around 7pm.
More pouches – We added a total of 50 this week!
Potluck – It was just 5 of us this time, but it’s always good to do trial runs on new dishes! The lentil and root vegetable mash with laganum turned out to be pretty good, although it didn’t cook to mush the way it showed in the recipe. It also needs garum (which we forgot) or soy sauce and it’s supposed to have rue, as well, but it was tasty all on its own.
How to eat the laganum and mash (yes, those are flour tortillas, we had to fake it because no spelt flour, yet!)
- Lentil and root veg mash with laganum – Anja (recipe from Apicius)
- Hawaiian Rolls, Jalapeno Cheesebread, Pumpkin Seed Bread – Marcus
- Carrot Veg pickle – Anja and Loren
- Brie & Cheddar Cheese – Loren
- Pork Roasted with honey and cumin – Marcus
- Olives – Loren
- Mushroom mustard pickle – Anja and Loren
- “A strange fruit from the new world” – Anja
- Lemon water – Loren and Anja
The lentil and root veg mash recipe
- 2 cups lentils
- 6 cups water
- 4 parsnips (chopped)
- pound of carrots
- 1 medium onion
- 1 tbsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp cumin
- laganum (a spelt flour flatbread) faked with flour tortillas
Cooked in a crockpot for 16 hours on low! This was either too much water, or too small or wimpy a crockpot. We’ll try this one again.
